This measure may lead to serious personal and public health problems
13th March 2009: The measure requiring medics to report illegal immigrants to the police “doesn’t convince me,” Speaker of Italy’s Chamber of Deputies Gianfranco Fini has said.
The Senate recently approved the Security Package containing a measure allowing medics to report to the police illegal immigrants who seek medical care in hospitals. The Security Package is now being examined at the Chamber of Deputies.“At the Emergency units there are police officers and carabinieri, at most they may do it themselves, but certainly not the doctor whose duty is to treat,” Mr. Fini said.
He went on to say that the measure would lead to serious personal and public health problems.
Illegal immigrants, Mr. Fini said, would be forced to seek medical care in non-authorised facilities. This would lead to spread of infectious diseases. “It is a risk for the society,” he said.
Mr. Fini termed the measure “an immoral law” because it hits people’s rights. “Respect for the person always comes first because he is first of all a human being, then an illegal immigrant,” Mr. Fini said.
