At San Gallicano, nobody will be reported to police

Dr. Aldo Morrone: New measure very dangerous for public health

21st February 2009: Doctors at Rome’s San Gallicano hospital have declared that they’ll not report illegal immigrants who seek medical care there. This decision has been made following a recently approved rule in the Senate allowing doctors to report to the police illegal immigrants they treat.

Dr. Aldo Morrone, Director General of the National Institute for the promotion of migrants' health and the control of poverty-related diseases said that the cultural mediators working the hospital decided to make it clear that no one will be reported.
He revealed that the moment news went round that the measure had been approved, many illegal immigrants, especially women felt terrible fear and sought to know if the hospital staff would report them.

Dr. Morrone said the measure was very dangerous for public health as those infected by infectious diseases such as HIV, TB, Syphilis; etc would avoid seeking medical treatment for fear of being expelled.
