
In 2008 there were 1,600,000 immigrants in Lombardy, 121,000 more than the previous year. Immigrants in the Region are now 10% of the general population, a new report shows.
The Region hosts a quarter of the total population of immigrants in the country, currently estimated to be 4,5 million (both legal and illegal immigrants).
The report "Gli immigrati in Lombardia, VIII Rapporto dell'Osservatorio Regionale per l'integrazione e la multietnicità" shows that most of these immigrants live and work stably in the local territory. There are 838,000 residents, and more than 200,000 families.
Eastern Europeans are the majority with some 383,000 citizens (88,000 more than the previous year), followed by Asians with 228,000 (about 14,000 more than the previous year). North Africans come third with 218,000 (17,000 more than the previous year), followed by South Americans with about 139,000.
Each of the following countries has more than 100,000 people in Lombardy: Romania, Morocco, and Albania.
There are some 448,000 foreigners in the province of Milan, out of which 215,000 live within the city of Milan.
In Brescia, there are 167,000 foreigners, in Bergamo there are 155,000 while in Varese the there are 65,000.
In the province of Pavia, there are 58,600 foreigners while in Mantova there are 56,000. Cremona and Como host 44,000 foreigners each, while Lecco is home to 29,300 foreigners.
In Lodi, there are 25,000 foreigners while in Sondrio there are 8,400 foreigners.
